Last weekend the club held an overnight camping weekend at the Bouldercombe sports facility. A great time was had by all that attended.
It was unfortunate that less than 30 of us were only able to attend due to the Covid restrictions placed upon us earlier in the week, but these are difficult times and some of us getting out is better than none at all.
We are well aware that these grounds have been heavily detected for several years, so it is no surprise that pickings were slim. Some highlights that came from the grounds were. 1918 Half Penny, 1936 Penny, a couple of Roo pennies and an 1891 Threepence. There were a few old metal buttons and brass saddle rivets picked up along the way. A quantity of rubbish was recovered and disposed of, and we had a 10 minute challenge with members scrambling to find as many ring pulls as they could in that time frame.
Some of the guys went under the old royal hotel and pulled out well over $100 of coins and several pre decimals with 1 member finding 9 silver threepence. A beautiful florin was recovered and another member broke her curse of never being able to find a Ram’s head shilling. She also recovered an 1862 One Centime from under the community hall. We named that coin the find of the hunt.
We also had a visit from local MP Barry O’Rourke and Rockhampton Regional Council’s Drew Wickerson who both stopped by to catch up with the club members and to see what we were finding.
A big thank you goes to Marie who opened the facilities for us on the day so we could stop and have a cup of tea with a biscuit and a comfort break. The ladies in the group appreciated this the most.
Len at the campgrounds certainly looked after us as well with fire wood and allowing us to detect the grounds on that side. He had a genuine interest in what we do and happily went through the relics we had on display.
If anyone requires a great function facility, please get in contact with the Bouldercombe Progress Association. They hire the grounds at a very reasonable rate with everything you could possibly need.
